Captain Diana Hedrick
Criminal Investigations Section Captain
Captain Diana M. Hedrick has dedicated her entire adult life to public service, beginning with service in the United States Coast Guard in 1990, and then embarking upon her career as a police officer with the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) in 1992. Captain Hedrick spent the vast majority of her time with MDPD in investigative units, including general investigations, economic crimes, violent crimes, gang violence, and homicide.
Captain Hedrick joined the Miami Gardens Police Department (MGPD) in 2008, continuing on an investigative path in the Economic Crimes Unit. She was promoted to Sergeant in 2012, and assigned to Patrol Operations. Within this command, she focused on addressing violent crimes and established an intelligence network used to solve crimes. In 2015, she was reassigned to the Gang Unit, where she incorporated her intelligence-led approach to gang investigations, along with enhancing multi-agency initiatives to address criminal gang activity. In 2016, Captain Hedrick received her promotion to Captain and returned to patrol operations, until her return to Criminal Investigations Section in June 2018.
As the Captain for the Criminal Investigations Section, Captain Hedrick oversees the operations of the Homicide Unit, Violent Crimes Unit, Special Victim’s Unit, Property Crimes Unit, Auto Theft Unit, Financial Crimes Unit, and Crime Scene Investigations. Captain Hedrick brings experience and professionalism to the unit and strives to improve its effectiveness and efficiency. Captain Hedrick combines a hands-on approach to working with investigators and stakeholders alike, in order to promote recognized best practices in all investigative endeavors. Captain Hedrick recently authored and was awarded the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence grant to enhance the domestic violence unit. Captain Hedrick believes in implementing new technologies to support the investigative function but recognizes that there is no substitute for the community partnership fostered by face-to-face interactions and by promoting professionalism and positive community relationships.
Captain Hedrick has a Juris Doctorate degree from Nova Southeastern University; a Bachelor’s Degree from Florida International University; and Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice from Miami Dade College. She is a graduate of the 81st Command Officer’s Development Course and is a member of the International Association of Chief’s of Police and the Florida Police Chief’s Association. Captain Hedrick also dedicates time towards humanitarian projects such as the Special Olympics, Teen Court, and addressing the needs of the vulnerable homeless population in the City of Miami Gardens.
